Court / Young man drove twice while disqualified

SENTENCE on a young man from Sandwick who pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified on two separate occasions in May has been adjourned until next year.

Shyren Batziris admitted driving near his home at Houlland Lea on 13 and on 22 May when he appeared at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Thursday.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the 21-year-old had bought a car to do it up and he had been driving the vehicle in the nearby environs.

He was previously banned from driving for three years and nine months in January 2024 after admitted a charge of dangerous driving. Batziris had also been placed under supervision for 18 months.

It came after he caused “horrendous” injuries to a passenger after smashing car into a crash barrier at Quarff in January 2023.

His passenger sustained serious injuries to both his legs and had to be cut free from the wreckage of the car by the fire and rescue service, while Batziris himself escaped with relatively minor injuries.

At court on Thursday Sheriff Ian Cruickshank asked for a criminal justice social work report and the case was adjourned until 15 January next year.
