Pair who caused dogs ‘unnecessary suffering’ ordered to appear in court
TWO COCKAPOO dogs were found in “chronic discomfort” and with heavily matted fur after being mistreated by their owners over a six-month period.
Peter and Helen Doyle admitted causing the dogs unnecessary suffering at their home address in Robertson Crescent in Lerwick between 8 May and 8 November 2025.
Lerwick Sheriff Court heard on Wednesday how the police said the dogs – one female and one male – had not received the necessary care, and had not been groomed or received veterinary treatment.
The female dog’s fur was “heavily matted” with a “hard, dense” coat covering her body, head and legs.
One of her eyes was covered by a thick matt of fur, which had impacted her vision.
Police said the mistreatment of the female dog had resulted in “infection, pain and chronic discomfort” for the animal. She also had overgrown nails.
The male dog similarly had not received any groom or veterinary treatment, and was heavily matted.
This had again resulted in infection, pain, itching and chronic discomfort of his skin, police said.
Peter Doyle, 58, and Helen Doyle, 43, admitted the charges by letter to Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday.
However Sheriff Robert Frazer decided not to sentence the pair, and asked instead that they be made to attend court in person.
The case was deferred until 29 July for their personal appearance in the dock.
