Police thank public who helped to apprehend man ‘violently resisting’ arrest
MEMBERS of the public stepped in to help police apprehend a man who was violently resisting arrest in Lerwick on Sunday morning.
Chief inspector Chris Sewell thanked those who helped police officers to arrest the man at the Esplanade in Lerwick at around 12.35am on Sunday.
Sewell said that the man had “violently resisted” arrest, and that officers were only able to bring the situation under control with the help of members of the public who stepped in.
He said that due to the fast-moving nature of the incident, officers had unfortunately been unable to obtain the details of those individuals who assisted.
“I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank them for their actions,” Shetland’s area commander said.
“These individuals stepped forward without thought for their own safety, to support local officers, in what was a high risk and challenging situation.
“Their actions were greatly appreciated and represent the very best of public spirit and community in Shetland.”
The man will appear at Lerwick Sheriff Court at a later date.
