Drink-driver banned after overturning car in crash

A DRIVER who was three times over the alcohol limit more than four hours after crashing his car has been banned from the road.

Cameron Mullay, 45, admitted to driving with 173 milligrams of alcohol in 100ml of blood on 1 April this year on the B9075 road at South Nesting.

Mullay, from South Nesting, had crashed his car – which ended up on its roof – at around 6.30pm.

He was only tested for alcohol by police at around 10.50pm and was found then to be more than three times over the 50mg blood limit.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie told Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday that police, ambulance and the fire service had attended the scene of the crash.

Mullay had already managed to get out of the car and had no injuries, but was taken to the Gilbert Bain Hospital as a precaution.

He co-operated fully with police, the fiscal added.

Defence agent Tommy Allan said Mullay had also pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.

Allan said his client had been under a great deal of stress as a result of his job at the time, but had since moved into new employment which was “less stress and less travel”.

Sheriff Jennifer Gear said Mullay had been “extremely lucky” that he had not caused serious injuries to himself or someone else during the crash.

He was banned from driving for 12 months and fined £600.

Mullay can reduce his driving ban by three months if he takes the drink-drivers rehabilitation course.
