Court / Drivers banned from the road

A YOUNG fish farm worker from the South Mainland has been fined and disqualified after admitting a case of careless driving that forced another motorist to take evasive action.

Blake Isbister pleaded guilty by letter to the charge when his case was called at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday morning.

The court heard the 19-year old attempted to overtake three vehicles at a blind corner and in the face of an oncoming vehicle on the A970 at Quarff on 13 November last year.

The court noted that the teenager had already been disqualified on 11 March for a dangerous driving offence that took place in December, after the careless driving before the court on Wednesday.

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank fined Isbister, of Cunningsburgh, £600 and imposed a discretional disqualification of six months.

A FIFTY-two year old man from Lerwick was fined £800 and banned for a year after admitting driving while under the influence of drugs.

Darral Collins was stopped in town by police during a routine check on 17 November when he was found to drive without insurance and over the limit on two drug readings.

Collins, of St Olaf Street, pleaded guilty to having 32 micrograms of cocaine in one litre of blood when 10mg is allowed.

He also admitted a reading of 7.4mg of Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (cannabis), where the legal limit is 2mg.

Representing himself Collins told the court he was in employment and did not need any extra time to pay the fine.

He was admonished for the insurance offence.

Meanwhile, sentence on a man from Airdrie who pleaded guilty to charges of speeding and drug driving was deferred until next month for personal appearance.

Derek Nairn had pleaded guilty by letter to driving with a speed of 73mph on the A970 at Girlsta, where 50mph is allowed.

The 32-year old, with an address at Wheatholm Street, also admitted being over the limit for drug driving.

Readings taken stated that Nairn had 4.7 micrograms of Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (cannabis) in one litre of blood, and no less than 117mg of Benzoylecgonine (a metabolite of cocaine), where 50mg is allowed.

Nairn is due to be sentenced on 3 June.
