Whalsay’s famous cup run ends in final defeat

WHALSAY lost out in the final of football’s Highland Amateur Cup today (Saturday).

The Bonnie Isle side were aiming to become the first team from Shetland to win the prestigious competition in its almost 50 year history.

However Golspie Stafford struck early in the match in Wick, and despite strong pressure from Whalsay a second goal from Gospie in the 67th minute gave them a 2-0 cushion.

Whalsay pushed forward in search of a goal that would bring them back into the match, but a 72nd minute sucker punch from Golspie on the counter made it 3-0 and sucked the life from Whalsay.

A final goal from Golspie in the dying minutes completed the victory and a 4-0 score which was very harsh on Whalsay.

Lerwick Spurs had previously been the team from Shetland who made it furthest in the Highland Amateur Cup, which is the Highlands and Islands’ most prestigious cup competition, losing in extra-time to Pentland United in 2018.
