SIX SWIMMERS from Lerwick Amateur Swimming Club enjoyed a successful weekend at the Orkney Open, returning home with a haul of medals and a stack of personal bests.

Saturday set the tone when Isla Powis struck gold in the 200m backstroke and added bronze in the 50m fly, while Freya Turnbull claimed bronze in the 100m breaststroke with an impressive 15.14s personal best.

Lauren Lavelle also picked up bronze in the same event, and Cora Grant produced a standout swim in the 200m individual medley, slicing 6.49 seconds off her best to take silver.

In the second session Nathan Anderson won two bronze medals, Turnbull, Isla Powis and Lavelle all took bronze in their age-group 50m freestyle, and Turnbull and Lavelle powered to gold in 100m backstroke.

By the end of the first day Lerwick swimmers had collected 15 medals.

Sunday brought more success with Anderson leading the way with gold and two silvers. Turnbull continued her remarkable progress with multiple PBs and medals, while Lavelle added two silvers.

Isla Powis won silver and bronze, and Grant and Eden Powis both delivered determined swims, gaining valuable race experience and more personal bests.

A fantastic team effort saw them take home a total of 23 medals.

Lerwick ASC thanked Orkney ASC for hosting the meet, and its sponsors NorthLink Ferries and L&M Engineering for their continued support.

THE BRAE table tennis league has completed its third year, with three new champions crowned.

Table tennis league winners Giovanni Carlaccini, Terry Peterson, and Harry Johnson.

Division one was a keenly fought contest between brothers Terry and Ryan Peterson, with Terry’s sets won/lost figure one better than Ryan’s. With sister Leah in third, it was a family lockout of the top places.

Giovanni Carlaccini won all of his 14 matches to seal the division two title and promotion to the top division. He will be joined by Gibby Wood, who took second place.

Harry Johnson was another dominating winner, taking the division three title without losing a match. Jaden Martin had a strong finish runner-up.

Mitchell Johnson won the team player award for his tireless work helping set up the hall, which is only available on a very tight timescale.

WHITEDALE, Lerwick Spurs and Whalsay are through to the next round of the Highland Amateur Cup after victories over the weekend.

Whalsay thrashed championship side Southside Impact 9-0 at Harbison Park on Saturday, while Whitedale edged past Thistle 2-1 at Strom.

Boca Seniors could not field a team against Spurs, so the milkbags progressed in their place.

All three teams will now meet opponents from the Western Isles, with Whalsay meeting Stornoway United and Whitedale facing Stornoway Athletic.

Spurs will face Westside FC in the second round, with all matches set to be played on 30 May.

Club president Bob Brandie (left) presents the Red Robbie Watt trophy to Alan Smith.

TWENTY eight members took part in the Red Robbie Watt bowls competition at the weekend.

In this competition players play three seven-end sets, with the rink, playing position and fellow team members drawn out of the hat for each set.

The shield winner is the player with the highest shot total after the three sets, and this year both Nuy Coutts and Alan Smith had a total of 30 shots.

After comparing shot difference and ends won, Smith was declared the winner.
