“Whether you’re looking to get back into football or try it for the first time, this is a great place to start.”

LERWICK Outdoor Bowling Club will begin its new season with the opening of the green this weekend.

The green will be opened at 2pm in King Harald Street on Saturday, with new members welcomed.

A £30 annual fee is required to become a member along with a small fee per competition. For players aged 12-16 the annual fee is only £10.

The club can loan bowls to new players, and the only item of clothing that is required is a pair of flat soled shoes.

Coaching and guidance from experienced players is always available, with a special try bowls day on Sunday 26 April between 2 and 4pm.

This will be a fun, informal session – ideal for complete beginners or those wanting to improve their skills.

In the other tie, Spurs saw off Highland Fuels cup winners Ness United 6-2, with a brace from Lewis Harkness and further goals from Lewis Barclay, Sean Nicol, Sam Ward and Paul Molloy.

Spurs will now play newly formed Boca Seniors on 9 May, while Whitedale will meet Thistle.

Whalsay will host Southside Impact in the other first round fixture next month.

SEVEN senior badminton players travelled to Orkney at the weekend to take part in the R. Clouston Silver championships.

Joe Thomson and Rory Irvine reached the semi-finals of the men’s doubles, while Liam Flaws and Thomas Calder made it to the final.

There they lost a tight three-setter to top Orkney player Andrew Reid and the talented Ganesh Balaji in an entertaining spectacle.

Ruth Anderson teamed up with Orkney’s Rebecca Seator in the women’s doubles, while Amy Sineath and Kylie Wood joined together.

Irvine and Sineath faced a tough group in the mixed doubles, and only just missed out on the quarter finals.

Anderson and Thomson did progress to the quarter finals, where they lost to fellow Shetlanders Wood and Flaws in a high-quality affair.

They eventually lost to Jody Groundwater and Andrew Reid in the semi-final.

Calder and Shannon Leslie progressed through their group and went on to the final, where they came up short in a gruelling three-setter, losing 21–18 in the third.

Thomson was the only Shetland player to compete in the singles on Sunday, with travel arrangements and injuries ruling out the rest of the team.

SHETLAND men’s rugby side ended their season in disappointing fashion, with a final defeat capping off a tough campaign.

They lost 33-19 at home to Ross Sutherland, which leaves them with a record of one win and 11 defeats after 12 league fixtures.
