THE HIGHLAND Amateur Cup final has been rescheduled to Saturday 29 August as Whalsay wait to see who their opponents will be.
Golspie Stafford had beaten Mallaig 2-1 in the semi-finals to set up a date with the Bonnie Isle side on 15 August.
But the Highland Amateur Cup committee said at the weekend they were now reviewing whether Golspie had fielded an ineligible player in the Mallaig fixture.
As a result, the cup final has been pushed back by two weeks as both teams – and Whalsay – anxiously await the outcome.
WHALSAY meanwhile remain firmly in the hunt for a first Premier League title in 15 years after narrowly beating Celtic on Monday night.
Celtic’s own hopes of lifting the title remain slim after the 1-0 defeat, with Whalsay now six points off leaders Spurs with two games in hand.
Spurs can lift the title at Seafield on Friday night though if they beat Whalsay in their final game of the league season, with a draw or win for Whalsay enough to keep the title alive.
Deposed champions Whitedale did their part in delaying Spurs’ celebrations on Monday, thrashing them 5-1 at Strom to finish the season strongly.
Bottom sides Scalloway and Thistle played out an entertaining 3-3 draw meanwhile.
BOWLERS played for the George Robertson memorial trophy on a lovely sunny Sunday over three games of six-ends.
The final scores showed there were several teams level with four points after two wins, but only one ahead on 4.5 points for two wins and a draw.
That was the team of Neal Redfern (skip) Caroline Smith and Nuy Coutts, who were presented with the cup by Scott Tomlinson representing George Robertson & Co.
WITH only one round of matches remaining in the Simpson Pairs bowls league, Alex Elphinstone and Anne Robertson are once more top of the table with 18 points.
That came after their 38-2 win over Gordon Stevenson and Jean Jarmson.
Their nearest opponents, Ian Scott and Gibbie Pottinger, are on 17 points after they lost a very close game against Bill Christey and Norman Manson 16-15.
Billy Hay and Angela Gifford (sub for Eric Muir) remain on 16 points having lost 23-14 against John Jarmson and Caroline Smith.
Ann Napier and Alan Smith (sub for Rosie Jamieson) had a convincing win 30-2 against Margaret Robertson and Jim Wood to be equal on 16 points with Muir and Hay, but behind on shot difference.
Next week’s final games are Elphinstone and Robertson against Muir and Hay; Scott and Pottinger against Jarmson and Smith; Napier and Jamieson against Christey and Manson; and Stevenson and Jarmson against Robertson and Wood.
