A LAST-GASP winner helped Whitedale to lift football’s GTS County Shield for the first time in 15 years on Saturday.

Lerwick Celtic – who also had not won the shield since 2015 – twice led in the final at North Loch Park in Lerwick through goals from Kennedy Moar and Connor Regan.

But Whitedale twice battled back to level the game, with Bobby Scott and Jos Hatrick netting for the Manson Cup champions.

And Whitedale’s Lorne McNiven popped up in the final moments to give them the lead for the first time, and an eventual 3-2 win which saw them crowned County Shield champions.

SWIMMER Julian Okroj has been called up to swim for Scotland’s junior team again.

Okroj, who represents Delting Dolphins, attended a Scottish swimming camp in Aberdeen at the weekend where his selection was confirmed.

The teenager cemented his status as one of Shetland’s brightest young sporting talents with a superb showing at a major swimming event in Sheffield this July.

Okroj qualified for the Aquatics GB Next Generation championships through his previous performances, and went on to reach nine finals – finishing in the top six in every one of them.

He also came home with a silver medal in the 200m backstroke and a bronze medal in the 400m individual medley.

SHETLAND men’s rugby team fell to a 48-10 away defeat to North Police Scotland on Saturday.

It was the second away fixture on the trot for the side, and a second successive defeat, in their third league match of the new campaign.

Another away day is next up for the men’s side, making the short journey south to face Aberdeen Grammar Rugby 2s on Saturday 17 October.

Meanwhile the Shetland Valkyries are also travelling to the Granite City this weekend, meeting Aberdeenshire Quines on Saturday.

THE SHETLAND under-14s football team saw their youth Scottish Cup adventure come to an agonising end on Sunday.

The blues travelled south to face Cove Youth FC in Aberdeen in round two of the cup competition at the weekend.

After a 2-2 draw over the course of normal time, with Lowrie Nicol and Riley Jozwik netting for Shetland, the game then had to go to penalties to decide the winner.

There it was Cove who came out as 5-3 winners to progress to round three.
