Sporting round-up 6 October 2026

  • Whalsay B league winners
  • Joint Cup final
  • Valkyries defeat
  • Mixed volleyball league
  • Swimming age group championships

Whalsay have completed a league double by winning the reserve league.

WHALSAY B have made it a league double for the Bonnie Isle side after seeing off Delting in a title decider in Lerwick last Wednesday.

Delting went into the fixture needing to beat Whalsay by at least two goals to take the title to a play-off, while a Delting win by three goals or more would have clinched the reserve title.

But Whalsay B ensured it was their name on the trophy for the first time since 2012 with a 3-1 win.

Striker Ethan Rathore netted a hat-trick for Whalsay, with Leighton Flaws responding for the Delts.

It is the first time since 2010 that Whalsay have won both the A and B leagues in the same season.

DELTING can still end their season on a high in the DFDS joint cup final this Saturday.

The Delts will face Thistle B in the showpiece after seeing off Celtic B 3-1 in the semi-final at the weekend, with Caleb Witt, Marc Hunter and Peter MacLachlan netting. Finlay Moar responded for the Celts.

A double from Arron Peart meanwhile helped Thistle B to beat Ness B 2-0 in the other last four fixture to set up Saturday’s final.

The match takes place at the 3G North Loch Park pitch in Lerwick at 5pm on Saturday 10 October.

SHETLAND Valkyries were beaten by Aberdeenshire Quines in their first away match of the season on Saturday.

The Valkyries headed south aiming to follow up their opening 87-12 win over Lochaber last month, but fell to a 22-10 defeat to hand their opponents the initiative in the league campaign.

Just four teams – Shetland, Aberdeenshire Quines, Caithness Krakens and Lochaber – are taking part in the Tennent’s Caledonia north division one this season.

Next up for the Valkyries is a home tie against Caithness Krakens, which takes place at the Clickimin North Loch Park pitch this Saturday at 1pm.

DIGGERS remain unbeaten at the top of the mixed volleyball league after winning their first four games.

They overcame Venture Globetrotters 3-0 at the end of September, with second-placed Geckos falling to a 2-1 defeat to Benchwarmers.

Diggers had the week off when the league returned on Thursday, with Venture Globetrotters recovering from their defeat a week previous to beat Benchwarmers 3-0.

After taking the first set 25-14, they narrowly clinched the second 25-17 before romping clear to win the third 25-10.

Luke Bennet and Kaylee Cluness were named most valuable players for Venture, while Jarryd Jamieson and Sarah-Marie Riise took the honours for Benchwarmers.

Geckos climbed back into second spot with a comfortable 3-0 over Rexel, taking the first set 25-14.

Again the second set was closer, but won 25-16 by Geckos to clinch the victory. They saw out the third set 25-11.

Robbie Polson and Ashleigh Nisbet were named most valuable players for Rexel, while Sophie Morris and Wayne Leask took the honours for Hot Geckos.

SUNDAY saw 115 swimmers take part in the Shetland age group championships at Clickimin Leisure Complex in Lerwick.

Swimmers ranged in age from eight to the 17+ age groups, with lots taking part for the first time in competitive competitions.

There were many personal bests right throughout the age groups in all the strokes across a busy day of action.

The swimming association thanked all the officials, the Clickimin pool staff and all who helped bring this competition together.

A list of the competition winners can be read here.
