Sporting round-up 20 October 2026

  • Lewis Harkness on the move
  • Rugby clubs enjoy wins
  • Table tennis doubles winners

Lewis Harkness.

FORMER Lerwick Spurs forward Lewis Harkness has signed with Rutherglen Glencairn FC.

Harkness was named man of the match as Shetland retained the Milne Cup in Kirkwall this summer, with Shetland manager Jim Tait describing him as a “class act”.

He is now set to play in the West of Scotland Football league for Rutherglen, who currently sit fourth in the table.

He will come up against the likes of St. Roch’s, Glenafton Athletic and Darvel – who famously knocked Aberdeen out of the Scottish Cup in 2023.

Harkness previously also played for Golspie Sutherland in the North Caledonian League.

BOTH of Shetland’s senior rugby teams celebrated victory on Saturday afternoon.

The men’s team recorded a massive win in the Granite City, thrashing Aberdeen Grammar 2nd 103-5, with Ethan Bradley earning player of the match.

Shetland RFC thanked some of its players for stepping in to play for Aberdeen at the weekend to ensure the game could go ahead.

There was also success for the Valkyries in the women’s national shield, with a closely-fought 24-14 victory over Lismore RFC.

The Valkyries welcomed Lismore north to the North Loch Park for the fixture, with the sides due to meet again in the Central Belt next year.

Katherine Umphray was named forwards player of the match, while Annika Keppie took the prize for the backs. Selina Keppie was named player of the match by the opposition.

DOUBLES table tennis is a big focus in the preparation for the 2027 Island Games in the Faroe Islands.

With that in mind, Shetland Table Tennis Association recently staged a well-attended division based winter doubles competition at the Clickimin over two nights.

Players from all seven divisions took to the tables, producing lively rallies, plenty of close contests and a warm, goodnatured atmosphere throughout.
