Sporting round-up 28 October 2026

A TWENTY year old Cunningsburgh man has made it to the last 64 at the Amateur Darts Circuit national final in Oxford, finishing the weekend ranked 127th in Scotland.

Kyle Tait qualified earlier this year and travelled the long way to take part in the ADC National Finals at Bradmoor Farm in Aylesbury between 15-18 October.

Kyle competed in a range of competitions across the weekend, placing among the top players in his categories and getting down to the last 64 in many of them.

The weekend built up to the national final itself, where more than 660 players had qualified from almost 13,000 nationwide. The competition was fierce, but Kyle played well and came through some tough groups to reach the final 64. That was where his run came to an end.

He finished the weekend ranked 127th in Scotland (out of 670) and 2,970th in the UK (out of 13,000), and took home some prize money too.

Local businesses DITT Construction, Kelvin Anderson, JA & GD Nicolson and Hevda LK806 were thanked for their sponsorship.

Tait said: “The whole weekend was an amazing experience.

“I would never have been able to get there and take part without the help and support of my sponsors, family and friends, so to them I am very grateful. And it was great to come away with some prize money too.”

SHETLAND’s mens rugby team recorded their third consecutive away win in as many weeks after beating Banff 18-7 at the weekend.

SHETLAND Indoor Bowling Club held its first open competition of the season at the weekend, where a record turnout of 36 players took part.

The open triples event involved a group stage, with four groups featuring three teams in each. This was followed by quarter finals, semi finals, and a final. The bottom placed teams after the group stage advanced to a plate semi-final, followed by a final.

The final of the plate competition saw Colin Bain, Ingrid Roberts and Wilda Inkster come up against Ally Leslie, Chris Bunyan and Eric Muir.

There was some good bowls from all during the final, with it coming down to the very last bowl to decide the result of the match. Ultimately the winners were Bunyan, Leslie and Muir 7-5.

The final of the main competition involved the team of Gibbie Pottinger, Roy Cumming and Sandy Wylie, against Allan Bruce, Dawn Manson and Willie Coutts.

Just like in the plate final, it came down to the very last bowl of the game to decide the result of the match.

With the match finishing in a 4-4 draw, it therefore came down to ends won to determine the winners. Willie, Dawn and Allan won with four ends to three.

At the prize giving, the club thanked everyone for attending, including the good number of spectators who turned out to watch.

A big thanks was given to Northwards who sponsored the competition.

If you are new to bowls and would like to give it a go, come along to Clickimin bowls hall for 2pm every Saturday. The season runs until the end of April.

SATURDAY saw the first darts grand prix of the season – the Hughson Brothers Shield – take place in the Whitedale Social Club with 55 players entering on the day.

Following the early rounds the quarter finals saw Frank Watt beat Aiden Grogan 4-0, Stuart Paul defeat Craig Sneddon 4-3, Philip Mowat beat Derek Hunter 4-2 and Neal Redfern defeat Keith Hay 4-1.

The semi finals were played over the best of nine legs, both producing two close matches, which saw Watt edge out Paul 5-4 and Redfern emerge a 5-3 winner over Mowat.

The final between Redfern and Watt was played over the best of 11 legs, Neal won the opening four legs of the final before Frank claimed leg five. Neal went on and claimed the next two legs to run out a 6-1 winner to claim the Hughson Brothers Shield.

Shetland Darts Association thanked Whitedale Social Club for hosting the event, sponsors Hughson Brothers for their continued sponsorship and Carl Cross for presenting the trophy.

THE JOSIE Kay memorial pool event took place this weekend with a new format where games were played in sets, not straight knockout.

Forty seven players were reduced to eight for the quarter final.

In the end it was Steve Duncan who won the event after beating Brian Dobson 4-3.

The Shetland Pool Association wished to thank the family of the late Josie Kay for their support, and to the Scalloway Boating Club for the use of the venue.
