Women’s football team retain Highlands and Islands trophy
THE SHETLAND women’s football team have retained their Highlands and Islands league cup trophy after a victory over Caithness today (Sunday).
Shetland beat their Highland counterparts 1-0 in Elgin to lift the trophy for the second year in a row, with captain Rhea Nicolson on the scoresheet late in the second half.
Shetland won it last year after defeating Sutherland 7-0 in their first time in the competition.
Speaking after this afternoon’s victory, Nicolson said she was “thrilled for us – the players, coaches , the club”.
“Two back to back titles is something to be really proud of,” she added.
“We stuck in and kept working right until the very end it shows how mature, professional and versatile this group of players are. It’s an amazing feeling to take the cup back home.
“Caithness didn’t make it easy but we keep knocking on the door and it was a great feeling to get the ball over the line.”
Next up for the women’s team will be another trip south to face Musselburgh Windsor in the first round of the Scottish Cup on 20 September.
