Sporting round-up 17 August 2026

SHETLAND badminton kicked off their new season with a fun tournament at Aith leisure centre over the weekend.

A total of 38 players were paired up for level and mixed doubles, with more experienced players partnering juniors to create roughly even teams.

Thomas Calder and Ella Macdonald won the mixed doubles competition.

The men’s doubles was won by Thomas Calder and Robbie Nicol, narrowly beating Ben Strang and Andrew Nicol 31-28 in the final.

In the plate event Conner Brown and Gordon Keith took the title, beating Joe Thomson and James Robertson 31-21.

The women’s doubles final was between Marah Mann and Zoe Anderson, and Olivia Macdonald and Carina McLatchie, with Macdonald and McLatchie taking the title 31-25.

Women’s plate winners Ingrid Nicol and Suzanne Inkster defeated Carrie Bennett and Annette Gear 31-25 in their final.

By the time the mixed event was getting underway time was running out, so it was a single set to 15 points.

Joe Thomson and Carrie Bennett were both runners-up for the second time, losing out to Thomas Calder and Ella Macdonald in the brief final.

Shetland Badminton said it was delighted to see juniors taking part alongside the seniors, and many of them persuaded their parents to dust off their rackets and return to competitive play.

SOUTHEND will meet Sandwick in an-all South Mainland Parish Cup final this Saturday after seeing off Delting on Sunday.

The rivals will meet at Gilbertson Park at 3pm this weekend, with Southend looking for a third Parish title in just seven years.

Sandwick on the other hand have not lifted the trophy since 1963, and are contesting their second final in three years – having lost 5-1 to Whitedale in 2024.

A HEAVY defeat for Spurs on Friday night has left three teams with the chance to win the Ocean Kinetics Premier League in an astonishing end to the season.

Spurs knew a win over Whalsay on Friday would secure the title, but the side from the Bonnie Isle thrashed them 6-1 in Lerwick to leave them four points from a first league title in 15 years.

Whalsay face Scalloway in the first of two games-in-hand tonight (Monday) and will draw level with Spurs on 21 points at the summit if they win.

If they do, that will leave a winner-takes-all clash between Whalsay and Celtic to play – with Celtic able to clinch the title themselves by winning that match.
