New project aims to merge electronic music and visual art at Mareel
ELECTRONIC music will meet visual art in a new project coming to Mareel next month.
NIGHTMIX will see local artists come together to build on Shetland’s growing electronic music and visual arts scene, bringing DJs, visual art, movement and lighting together while developing a new club feel in the Mareel auditorium.
The project comes from local visual artists Jono Sandilands and Chloe Tallack and aims transform the auditorium into an immersive club environment.
NIGHTMIX presents Between Light and Sound will take over the auditorium on Saturday 17 October, with Jono and Chloe bringing their developing visual work together with local DJs Bex and Drosso.
Ewan Moncrieff will also be working with the team to transform the auditorium with lighting, bringing the different elements of the project together for an immersive night of sound and visuals.
Before the main event in October, the team will hold two very different workshops, giving people the chance to experience and help shape some of the ideas behind NIGHTMIX.
Dance Gathering x NIGHTMIX takes place on Thursday 10 September from 7pm–8.30pm, with movement and meditation led by Andrea Sanchez and a live DJ set from Bex.
NIGHTMIX will also be experimenting with visuals, lighting and interactive elements throughout the session.
On Sunday 13 September, Sketchy Shetland x NIGHTMIX will bring drawing, music and creative exploration to the auditorium from 2pm–3.30pm.
Artist Lois Wiseman will support participants while Drosso provides a live DJ mix.
Both workshops are aimed at adults aged 18+ and are open to all abilities, with no previous dance or art experience required.
“We’re interested in bringing folk together who are excited by electronic music, visuals and creating a good space to dance,” say Jono and Chloe.
“We’re not quite sure where NIGHTMIX is going yet, but that’s the exciting bit. We want to experiment, get people involved and see what happens when we bring all these things together here in Shetland.”
The team are particularly keen to connect with people who might not normally see themselves as part of the electronic music or club scene, while creating opportunities for local artists and DJs to experiment with new ideas.
The project has been made possible through the Shetland Arts Commissioning Fund under Generator, supporting the production of new creative works in Shetland.
Tickets are available for all events through Shetland Arts, with a £5 discount on the October NIGHTMIX event available when booking an accompanying workshop.
