What’s on this September at Shetland Arts
Summer is officially over, but don’t worry, Shetland Arts has a bumper month of events, films, workshops and more happening at Mareel this month.
September Movies
National Cinema Weekend – 5 and 6 September
We’re taking part in National Cinema Weekend – where all films on the 5th & 6th of September are just £4! You can see some of this year’s most popular films – Toy Story 5, Minions & Monsters, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Odyssey or a new release; Tony or The Incomer.
Shetland Connections!
Did you know that The Shetland Woollen Company provided the Scottish film starring Domhnall Gleeson, The Incomer, with their Shetland jumpers?
Pressure is a World War 2 drama based on meteorologist James Stagg’s work planning the Normandy landings; Stagg was superintendent at the Lerwick Observatory from 1929 to 1930.
The Edge of the World (1937) was filmed on Foula and is about the way of life on a Hebridean island changing and two families clashing over staying or leaving.
New Releases
Lots of great new releases this month including; Sense & Sensibility, The Dog Stars, Practical Magic 2, Holy Days, One Night Only, The Death of Robin Hood, Late Fame, Sunny Dancer, Ish, Bitter Christmas and Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom.
Anniversary & Special Screenings
Enjoy some iconic titles and special screenings this month, including Terminator 2: Judgement Day (35th anniversary), Matilda (30th anniversary), Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger, National Theatre Live: The Misanthrope, Magical Stop Motion Shorts and our special Knitflix screenings where you can enjoy a film (Sheep Detectives or Strictly Ballroom) on the big screen while you knit (or crochet, or embroider…)

The Maes & Lizzie No | 4 & 5 September
Australian folk sisters The Maes join award-winning Americana artist Lizzie No for a special double bill, bringing two brilliant live acts to Shetland.
Dance Gathering x Nightmix | 10 September
Move, dance and connect at this relaxed evening of guided movement, meditation, live DJ sets and immersive visual experimentation.
SYPG Present… GROOVY | 19 September
Bring your friends and family for an intergenerational night of live music from SEDSO, RAZORHEAT and CALIBRE.
Singer Songwriter Night | 24 September
An evening of free live local music, or bring your own instrument and take the stage to try out new material or just enjoy from the audience.
Ashley Campbell | 25 & 26 September
Country and Americana artist Ashley Campbell brings her acclaimed live show with her full band to Shetland.
Neil Georgeson: Fireside Tales | 26 September
Shetland pianist Neil Georgeson returns with a captivating recital exploring the storytelling power of music.

Film Quiz | 17 September
Put your movie knowledge to the test with a fun-filled quiz spanning timeless classics and modern masterpieces, with prizes up for grabs.

Red Shoes Theatre: You Made Me | 8 & 9 September
This thought-provoking new play explores intergenerational trauma, identity and what happens when we choose not to act on that feeling that something isn’t right.
Revel | 23 September
This funny and moving 60+ coming-of-age story combines dance, physical theatre, dialogue and music to celebrate resilience, irreverence and the joy of life.
