FAROE and Shetland will come together at an online seminar being held by the UHI this week.

Shetland MSP Hannah Mary Goodlad MSP and former Faroese politician Bjørt Samuelsen will take part in the Political Conversations, Island Futures event from 1pm to 2.30pm on Thursday (22 October).

It is part of the Faroes Shetland Research Symposium, which is the result of discussions between colleagues from UHI Shetland’s Institute for Northern Studies and the Fróðskaparsetur Føroya.

Organisers said the event will be a “free-flowing, wide-ranging discussion between two well-known island politicians, covering a range of issues affecting islands today”.

More information on how to watch the event can be found here.

ANYONE concerned about rising bills is being encouraged to attend an “OVO in the Community” event in Lerwick next month.

The drop-in event, which is being held at the Sound Hall on Wednesday 4 November between 11am and 4pm, will see energy supplier OVO provide support and information.

However, advice is open to everyone, and not just OVO customers. Also present will be Shetland Citizens Advice Bureau, Home Energy Scotland and Hjaltland Housing Association (for its tenants).

SHETLAND Arts is celebrating Halloween season with a screening of one of the earliest horror masterpieces, 1925’s The Phantom of the Opera, alongside a live performed score.

Scottish composers Andrew Wasylyk and Tommy Perman – pictured above – have created a new score for the silent era classic, which can be heard on the soundtrack album House With A Curse.

They will perform the score alongside a screening of the film at Mareel on Wednesday 28 October, with folk told to expect music which navigates “opera, neo-classical, acoustic and electronic instruments with elements of sound design”.

The pair will also take part in a free ‘in conversation’ event at Mareel in the afternoon before the performance.

VISITING Shetland was “amazing”, according to comedian Paul Whitehouse as he reflected on his trip to the isles last year alongside Bob Mortimer to film their Gone Fishing show.

Speaking about Gone Fishing’s upcoming ninth series, in which Shetland will feature, Whitehouse said the isles have “extraordinary landscape and seascape”.

“We missed the puffins by a week though. You can’t control puffins! They migrate when they want,” he added.

The new series will air from Sunday (25 October).

COMMUNITIES will have more opportunities to have their say in shaping how Scotland’s largest landholdings are managed under proposals now open for public consultation, according to the Scottish Government.

The community engagement obligations and draft large land holdings guidance under the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2025 consultation paper is the next step in ensuring communities have more information about large land holdings of more than 1,000 hectares.

It is seeking views on what information should be included in new land management plans, required by the act, and what landowners should do to involve the communities in the creation of these plans. More information can be found here.
