Drama group production of wartime story to juggle ‘humour and heart’
ISLESBURGH Drama Group is preparing to bring wartime drama Spitfire Girls to Mareel next month – with around 75 per cent of tickets already sold.
Directed by first time director Cheryl Cluness, the production tells the story of the women of the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA), whose courage, skill and determination helped support Britain’s war effort during the Second World War.
Running from 10-12 November, the production comes at a particularly poignant time as communities across the country mark Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.
Written by Katherine Senior, Spitfire Girls follows two women reunited on New Year’s Eve 1959 as they reflect on their wartime experiences, friendships and sacrifices.
Inspired by true events, the play celebrates the women who defied expectations and played a vital role during the war while exploring universal themes of courage, loss, loyalty and hope.
For Cluness, it was the story’s historical significance that first captured her imagination.
“I read a selection of scripts at the start of the summer holidays and I was immediately captured by Spitfire Girls,” she said.
“I loved the story and I was amazed by the historical significance of it. I had never heard of the ATA and I was blown away by what I learned.”
Cluness believes audiences can expect a moving and memorable evening.
“The audience can expect a real mix of emotions,” she said. “They will be transported back in time by the wonderful cast and production team to reflect on and admire the commitment, sacrifices and impact of both men and women during WWII.”
While rooted in wartime history, Cluness said the story resonates because of its humanity.
“Fundamentally it is a story of universal human relationships, emotions and experiences,” she added.

The production also marks the Islesburgh Drama Group debut of well-known fiddler George Spence, who takes on the role of Tom.
“It’s been absolutely brilliant so far,” he said, “Stepping into a new group can always be a bit daunting, but everyone has been incredibly welcoming and encouraging right from the start. It’s a really tight-knit, supportive environment and I’m delighted to be part of this production.”
A key aspect of Spitfire Girls is said to be recognising the bravery and sacrifices of both women and men during the Second World War.
As the performances take place during the national period of remembrance, Islesburgh Drama Group is inviting audience members to join them in remembering those who served and those who lost their lives.
Poppies will be available at each performance, with donations supporting the Poppyscotland Appeal.
The initiative reflects the themes at the heart of the production and provides a meaningful opportunity for audiences to connect the story being told on stage with the wider acts of remembrance taking place across the country.
The group also said it is working alongside 102 Lerwick Detached Flight Air Training Corps, whose cadets will welcome audiences before each performance alongside Islesburgh Drama Group members.
Programmes will be available to purchase for £3, with payment accepted by cash, card or contactless payment.
All profits from programme sales will be shared equally between 102 Lerwick Detached Flight ATC and Poppyscotland.
Tickets are on sale now via Shetland Arts either in person at Mareel, by contacting 01595745500 or online.
