Sporting round-up 8 June

WHITEDALE have lifted the Northwards Manson Cup for the first time since 2013 after beating Whalsay in the final.

Goals from Alex Arcus and Greg Tulloch ensured Whitedale put their name on the trophy for a first time in 13 years, with Neil Laurenson responding for Whalsay at the Gilbertson Park on Saturday afternoon.

Whalsay will look to pick themselves up at home to Scalloway on Monday night in the Ocean Kinetics Premier League, with three games lined up.

Ness will welcome Thistle to Boddam at 6.30pm, while town rivals Spurs and Celtic will meet at Gilbertson Park.

SHETLAND Gymnastics Club returned to competition for the first time since last year’s island games in Cumbernauld.

In the copper 12+ competition, Adel Szucs performed her new routine confidently and placed seventh on floor. She was fifth on vault and bars, finishing eighth on beam, and secured seventh overall.

The gymnasts, from left: Oliwia Strachanowska, Zara Nicolson, Adel Szucs, Lori Nicolson and Julia Strachanowska.

Competing in the copper 14+ category were sisters Julia and Oliwia Strachanowska. Julia placed fifth on floor, while Oliwia finished seventh out of a strong field of 13.

Julia performed excellent vaults and claimed the bronze medal in her age category. She went on to place eighth on bars and beam, finishing eighth overall.

Oliwia also performed extremely well throughout the competition, placing 11th on vault and beam. Having chosen not to compete on bars, she finished 13th overall.

Zara Nicolson competed in the zinc 13+ category and delivered an impressive performance to finish fourth overall.

Her beam routine claimed her first place with a confident, fall-free performance. She also secured second on vault, while placing sixth on bars and seventh on floor.

Lori Nicolson competed in the 14+ category and placed 12th on bars out of a field of 16 gymnasts. Unfortunately, after sustaining an injury on beam, she was unable to continue in the competition and had to withdraw.

The coaches said they were delighted with the attitude and sportsmanship shown by all the gymnasts throughout the weekend.

Competing on beam, measuring just four inches wide, is challenging, with a single fall resulting in a full mark deduction. The challenge is even greater for Shetland gymnasts, who have an overnight ferry and further travel before stepping onto the floor.

Shetland Gymnastics Club said the team represented Shetland brilliantly and they could not be prouder of their performances. They also thanked NorthLink for their sponsorship and the parents who made the trip possible.

TWO PAIRS bowls competitions were held on the Lerwick outdoor green on Sunday.

The ladies played for the Scott trophy and the men were competing for the Jim Laurenson memorial trophy, with both 10-end, straight knockout competitions.

In the Scott trophy, the final winners were Anne Barron and Catherine Robertson after a 13 -1 victory over Angela Gifford and Anne Robertson.

In the Laurenson trophy, Bob Brandie and Alan Smith defeated Ian Scott and Alex Elphinstone 9-4.

The ladies’ trophy was presented by Ian Scott, and Anne Barron, the club vice-president, presented the men’s trophy.

THERE has been no change at the top of the Simpson pairs bowls league following the fourth game in the 14-week season.

Alan Smith (substitute for Alex Elphinstone) and Anne Robertson continued their unbeaten start by beating Ian Scott and Michael Ballard (substitute for Gibbie Pottinger) 19-12.

This puts Elphinstone and Robertson top of the league on eight points, ahead of Scott and Pottinger in second place on five points.

Ann Napier and Rosie Jamieson also have five points following their win over John Jarmson and Caroline Smith 17-9.

Jim Wood and Bob Brandie (sub for Margaret Robertson) had a good win over the previously unbeaten pairing of Eric Muir and Billy Hay, eventually winning by 22 shots to seven.

Bill Christey and Norman Manson also had a good win over Gordon Stevenson and Jean Jarmson, beating them 30-6.
