Sporting round-up 25 May
FENCER Mhairi Gifford is now Scotland’s top epee fencer, and is ranked 33rd in Britain, after some impressive recent performances.
Gifford’s position is an even more impressive achievement given the limited number of ranking competitions she can attend travelling away from Shetland.
In April she travelled to competitions including the Birmingham Open, the Glasgow Open and the British National Championships.
In the Birmingham Open, Gifford competed against a top UK field, coming 27th out of 88 fencers. She went out to Sophie Pear, the second ranked fencer in the UK.
Next came the Glasgow Open. Gifford won last year but was beaten in a very close final, 15-14 to Scottish rival Lucy Grant.
At the end of April she achieved an entry to the British National Championships, with only the top 60 UK ranked fencers invited to compete.
Gifford came through a very tough direct elimination fight to beat a higher ranked fencer, then went out to finish the top Scot in 31st position.
LERWICK Outdoor Bowling Club held its annual competition where half the entrants represent the club and half represent Morton Lodge.
This is a game of triples over 16 ends, with the winning team the one with the highest shot total.
When the shot total was added up at the end, the Lodge had only won in two of the six games with the total scores being 80 for the Lodge and 102 for the bowling club.
The best team performance was a 23-7 victory for the triple of Margaret Robertson, Rosie Jamieson and James Nicol.
ONLY one team remains unbeaten in the Simpson pairs outdoor bowls league after just two weeks.

Ian Scott and Gibbie Pottinger (sub for Ewen MacRitchie) won by beating Gordon Stevenson and Jean Jarmson 24-6, and the remaining game ended in a 20-20 draw between Rosie Jamieson and Ann Napier, and Eric Muir and Billy Hay.
