THE ABILITY Shetland parasports festival was held at Clickimin on Saturday, with more than 40 children and adults taking part this year.

In the main hall participants had the opportunity to try wheelchair basketball, curling, boccia, table tennis, and fencing.

Kayaking and swimming sessions were also available, giving attendees the chance to get involved in water-based activities in a fun environment.

The festival was supported by a fantastic group of volunteers and highlighted the importance of inclusive sport and providing a welcoming space for people of all abilities to get active.


PERENNIAL title challengers Lerwick Spurs won their opening league fixture of the season against town rivals Celtic on Friday.

Goals from Lewis Harkness and Jae Barclay ensured Spurs got their campaign off to the perfect start in a 2-0 win at the North Loch 3G pitch.

On Monday night Ness started their league season with a 4-2 win over Scalloway, with Reece Black, Liam Flaws, Mark Woodworth and Joe Casey netting for the South Mainland side.

Scalloway’s home fixture against Whalsay, due to be played at Hamnavoe, was postponed due to an unplayable pitch.

The league continues on Friday with Spurs hosting Ness, Thistle welcoming Whalsay and Scalloway playing league champions Whitedale.


SHETLAND ACSC (Hurricanes) and Delting Dolphins took eight swimmers to the University of Aberdeen long course meet at the weekend.

Julian Okroj took home silver in 200m butterfly and bronze in the 200m freestyle in the 15 to 16 age group.

Stella Okroj took on five events in the 14 and under group, improving her time in the majority of her swims and coming ninth for the 200m backstroke.

Ellie Thompson won bronze in the 800m freestyle and set a new PB in the 200m butterfly, while Astrid Anderson recorded new bests in the 50m freestyle and 50m breaststroke, along with long course PBs in the 50m backstroke, 100m breaststroke, and 200m freestyle.

Sophia Cheatle achieved the biggest PB of the weekend, taking 39 seconds off her 800m freestyle.

There were also a number of PBs for Eve Moncrieff, Ella Winks (12) and Molly Garrick.

Both clubs thanked NorthLink Ferries for their continued support, along with the National Lottery Community Fund, Polycrub Ltd, Busta House Hotel, Island Fish and sportscotland.


SHETLAND Indoor Bowling Club recently held its annual open pairs competition.

With an excellent entry of 24 players, the format was four groups of three teams in each, with the winning team from each group progressing to the semi-finals. All matches were played over nine ends.

Topping their respective groups were Colin Bain and Rob Hopkinson, Andrew Bain and Scott Uren, Rosie Jamieson and Ingrid Roberts, and Gibbie Pottinger and Pauline Christey.

The first semi-final saw Colin Bain and Hopkinson beat Jamieson and Roberts 14-3 after a strong performance.

Andrew Bain and Uren then played their best bowls of the day to see off Pottinger and Christey 18-2.

The final featured a unique family affair, with father and son Colin and Andrew going head-to-head in their skip roles.

After eight ends, Andrew Bain and Uren held a narrow 7–6 lead heading into the final end.

Coin Bain and Hopkinson secured a single shot under pressure to level the match at 7–7 in a tense finish.

With the scores tied, the winning team was decided on ends won, with Colin Bain and Hopkinson claiming victory by five ends to four.

The club thanked all players and spectators for attending, noting how encouraging it was to see such a strong entry, commenting that it is an excellent sign for the future.

Special thanks were extended to those who helped organise the event, as well as to everyone who kindly provided home bakes, sandwiches, and refreshments.
