Sporting round-up 1 June
TWO Shetland sides are through the last 16 of the Highland Amateur Cup after victories on the round on Saturday afternoon.
Lerwick Spurs soundly thrashed Westside AFC 9-1 at Culbokie Park to set up a tasty test against beaten 2025 finalists Inver FC on 20 June.
They have been joined in the third round by Whalsay, who eventually comfortably saw off Stornoway United 5-1 – albeit after the match went to extra time.
Premier league champions Whitedale were unable to join the other two in the last 16 after suffering an agonising penalty shootout defeat to Stornoway Athletic after a 1-1 result over 120 minutes.
Next up for Whalsay on 20 June is a tie against Inverness-based Ardersier FC, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
If both of the remaining Shetland sides come through their third round matches, they will meet in a mouth-watering quarter-final clash on 11 July.
LAST SUNDAY saw the latest edition of the Carnegie cycle sportive in Sandwick.
A turnout of 68 keen riders saddled up to take on either of the four routes depending on age or ability.
With recent surface dressing scuppering any plans to ride around Spiggie, a quick course change meant multiple loops of Clumlie for the longer endurance routes.
Twenty experienced riders pedalled their way around the south end, with occasional stops to the traybake feed zone for a boost.
First rider home on the 27-mile route was Cheryl Mouat in one hour, 45 minutes with Ross Osborn quickest around the 45-mile route in two hours, 27 minutes.
The junior riders were ripping up the streets on the five mile ride to Noness or the 1mile pavement ride for the toddlers to the youth centre and back.
Cycle organiser Robin Atkinson said: “This is the real highlight for us, watching the kids get into it. They all love it so much that some wanted to ride it again which has given us thought for more rides next year.”
