A BUILDING warrant has been granted for Shetland Gymnastics’ new facility in Cunningsburgh.
The club has endured a lengthy and arduous wait to find its own home, with planning permission granted earlier this year to turn a vacant workshop in the village into their permanent base.
Shetland Islands Council has now signed off on work getting underway, with hopes that the club may be in their new home by the end of the year.
THE MOST northerly junior parkrun in the world is set to launch this month in Lerwick.
Bairns aged 4-14 are being invited to get active, have fun and join a brand-new weekly community event.
Clickimin Loch junior parkrun will launch on Sunday 20 September, with families invited to meet at 9.15am beside the overspill car park by Anderson High School.
The launch morning will begin with a run briefing and warm-up, followed by the 2km run at 9.30am.
The free weekly event is designed to be welcoming to everyone.
Event director Lucy Livingstone said she and fellow director Catriona Barr were “delighted” to finally launch the event soon.
“Thank you to our friends at Bressay parkrun for all their support and guidance and thank you to our sponsors the community benefit fund at the Viking wind farm and Shetland Charitable Trust,” she said.
“We’re excited to get going and welcome you all along on 20 September.”
SHETLAND Sports Awards are returning in November to celebrate local successes achieved across the past year.
Nominations are being sought across eight award categories, including team of the year, sportsperson of the year and volunteer of the year.
There are also junior categories, as well as the inclusivity award – given to an athlete, club or volunteer who promotes inclusion within sport.

Nominations are also invited for the lifetime endeavour award, which honours an individual whose dedication and commitment to sport deserves special recognition. All finalists will be invited to attend the awards ceremony at Clickimin Leisure Centre on Friday 13 November.
The deadline for nominations is midnight on Sunday 13 September, with the judging panel then meeting to decide on the shortlist.

WHITEDALE under-18s are celebrating after winning the town council double league at Strom last week.
The club retained the trophy and were crowned under-18 league winners.
