The Shetland netball team competed in the invitational island games event in Jersey.

SHETLAND’S netballers beat Guernsey on Sunday to finish fifth at the second ever invitational netball island games in Jersey.

The blues took part in a round-robin competition against the likes of hosts Jersey, Ynys Môn and France on the first day of the competition, before the competition proper started on Saturday.

Shetland ran France mightily close in their final fixture, eventually succumbing 59-46, before a 61-40 loss to old rivals Orkney.

In their fifth/sixth place play-off tie on Sunday, the ladies recovered to deliver a superb 63-41 victory and to ensure a fifth placed finish overall.

It is the second time Shetland have taken part in a netball-only island games event, following an inaugural competition in the Isle of Man in 2023.

Shetland Netball said the win over Guernsey was a “fantastic way to round off an incredible weekend of netball”.

“We couldn’t be prouder of the effort, determination and team spirit shown by the whole squad throughout the tournament,” they added.

ALMOST 100 runners took part in the Spiggie 10k race on Sunday, with Euan Duernberger first across the line in the South Mainland.

A total of 96 runners lined up at the start, 54 women and 42 men, with Duernberger winning the race in a time of 34 minutes and 53 seconds.

He was closely followed across the line by Neil Arthur (35:07), with Ronan Bourke closing out the top three in a time of 36:16.

Rowan Burns was the first woman across the line in a time of 41:49, with Shelley Humphray (45:26) and Monica Moncrieff (46:12) rounding out the podium positions for the women’s race.

IT WAS a great weekend for both of Shetland’s hockey teams, with the men thrashing their mainland opponents in the Scottish Hockey reserve cup on Saturday.

The Shetland men’s hockey team won 7-0 at the weekend.

The blues progressed through to the quarter-finals after a resounding 7-0 win over Inverleith 3’s at the Aberdeen Sports Village at the weekend.

A double from Tom Nicolson and further goals from Bobby Williamson, Jake Davies, Joshua MacColl and Murray Sinclair ensured a comfortable route through to the last eight for Shetland.

They made it to the semi-finals of the reserve plate last year, finally falling on penalty flicks against Clydesdale 3’s.

The ladies team also recorded one win and one defeat in their inaugural North District league campaign over the weekend.

THE SHETLAND women’s volleyball team suffered defeat on the road over the weekend.

The ladies went down 3-0 in sets to City of Edinburgh 2’s, with the capital side taking the victory with 25-13, 25-10, 25-10 sets.
