Sporting round-up 13 July 2026

TWO SWIMMERS from Shetland have been south competing at the Scottish National Open Water races at Loch Ken in Dumfries and Galloway last weekend.

Ellie Thompson, 14, and Eve Moncrieff, 13, swam in both the 1km and 2km races, performing well.

In the 2km they came in seventh and eighth place respectively in the 13-14 age group.

Moncrieff was placed third among the 13 year olds, which means she has secured a place at British nationals at the end of this month.

In the 1km race both girls raced hard, Thompson finishing third among the age 14s and Moncrieff third in the age 13s.

Shetland ACSC would like to thank NorthLink Ferries for their continued sponsorship.

THE TOP of the Simpson pairs outdoor bowls league remains as it was after the leading three teams all won their games on Wednesday.

Leaders Alex Elphinstone and Anne Robertson had to come from behind to beat Alan Smith and Norman Manson 21-17 to stay top on 14 points.

This is only one point ahead of Ian Scott and Gibbie Pottinger, who won their game against Gordon Stevenson and Jean Jarmson convincingly 31-7.

Remaining in third place on 12 points are Eric Muir and Billy Hay who, although dropping two shots on the first end, went on to win 34-5 against Ann Napier and Rosie Jamieson.

The remaining game of the afternoon saw John Jarmson and Caroline Smith get off to a good start against Margaret Robertson and Catherine Robertson (sub for Jim Wood), scoring nine shots without reply, and they kept the pressure on throughout going on to win 28-12.

SHETLAND have warmed up for their inter-county fixture later this month by thrashing a select side of players playing in the Ocean Kinetics Premier League.

The blues ran out 8-0 winners at Gilbertson Park on Friday night as the new management team of Jim Tait and John Thomson enjoyed a comfortable start.

Their next fixture will be the Milne Cup match in Kirkwall on Saturday 25 July, where Shetland will go in search of a fifth consecutive victory in the fixture.

The squad for that fixture is set to be announced on Wednesday night.

WHALSAY will meet Black Rock Rovers of Evanton in the semi-finals of the Highland Amateur Cup next month.

Black Rock advanced to the last four after a 6-3 win over Avoch on Saturday, while Whalsay progressed after 2025 runners-up Inver pulled out of the fixture.

The semi-final tie will be played Castletown’s Back Park, in Caithness, on Saturday 1 August.

Golspie Stafford meet Mallaig in the other tie, with none of this year’s semi-finalists having lifted the Highland Amateur Cup before.
