A GROUP of 35 junior badminton players travelled from Shetland to Orkney on Saturday to compete in the Highland junior restricted tournament.
Shetland players competed against each other and players from Orkney and Caithness across several age groups and in singles, doubles and mixed events – returning with a clutch of titles and medals.
Camyrn Cheyney had a great tournament in the under-13s, winning the girls plate singles, plate level doubles with Ella MacDonald and the mixed plate with Peter Winson.
There was an all-Shetland semi-final in the main girls draw, between Eve Johnson and Aoife Gray, and Aoife Mccoo and Lily Nicolson.
Johnson and Nicolson made it to the final, where Johnson took the under-13s girls singles title 2-1.
In the boys competition, James Robertson made the final before losing 2-1 to south player Callan Curtis.
There was further success in the boys level doubles, with Lewis Odie and Winson claiming the title and Robertson and Robbie Nicol finishing runners-up.
In the mixed doubles, Robertson and Gray met Lewis Odie and Johnson in the semi-final – with Odie and Johnson progressing to the final.
Despite losing the first set, they recovered to win 2-1 and claim the mixed doubles title.
In the under-15s, Robbie Johnson won the boys singles title in a straight sets final victory. Carrie Bennett was runner-up in the girls section.
Fallon Winson and Carrie Bennett were crowned girls level doubles winners, and Dylan Odie and Robbie Johnson claimed the boys doubles title.
There was further success for Dylan Odie and Carrie Bennett in the mixed doubles, where they took the title, with James and Fallon Winson runners-up.

There were three Shetland semi-finalists in the under-18s girls singles, with Olivia MacDonald the eventual runner-up in the final.
Astrid Anderson and Heidi Simpson won the plate level doubles, with MacDonald and Lacey Work losing out in the final of the main level doubles.
In the boys plate singles, Max Finnie and Andrew Nicol battled it out with Finnie claiming the title. Callum Brown and Finnie were also runners-up in the level doubles.
In the mixed doubles Work and Brown finished as runners-up, while Finnie and Chloe Leask of Orkney won the mixed plate.
Shetland Badminton said the results demonstrated the depth of junior talent currently developing in Shetland.
They gave a big thanks to Malakoff for their continued sponsorship, and to all the parent helpers who ensured the trip could happen.
THE NORSE gods were smiling down as glorious sunshine greeted the junior Up Helly Aa squad for their annual lawn bowls competition at the weekend.
A total of 15 young Vikings from the 2027 junior Up Helly Aa squad took to the green for an afternoon of friendly competition.
The six teams taking to the green were The Jarl’s Guard, The Njuggles, Odin’s Ravens, Lagertha’s Warriors, The Berserkers and Ragnar’s Raiders.
Each team played three games against different opponents, with some excellent bowling on display, accompanied by plenty of friendly rivalry, encouragement and good sportsmanship.
Odin’s Ravens emerged victorious and were crowned this year’s junior Up Helly Aa bowls champions.
There was also a special presentation to junior jarl Erin Harries, who received a replica Viking galley.
To round off the afternoon, everyone took part in a fun one-bowl spider shootout, with a box of chocolates placed in the centre of the green as the target.
In a fitting finale the winning bowl belonged to birthday boy Magnie Williamson, who claimed the chocolates.
GOTHENBURG great Neil Simpson will be the Aberdeen Shetland supporter’s club’s guest of honour on Wednesday.
Simpson made over 200 appearances for Aberdeen and famously lifted the European Cup Winners Cup for the club in 1983 after beating Real Madrid in the final.
He will be in Shetland on Wednesday to sign copies of his new book Simmy between 4.30-5.45pm, before the club hosts an evening event in the Lerwick Legion.
Shetland men’s football manager Jim Tait, who is an Aberdeen fan, will lead a question and answer session starting at 7.30pm.
