LERWICK SPURS’ journey in the Highland Amateur Cup has come to an end, ruling out the prospect of an all-Shetland quarter-final.
They travelled down to Orkney on Saturday to take on Inver, and led 1-0 at half-time after defender Andrew Flett crashed in a header.
But Inver turned the tie on its head with two second half goals, winning 2-1 to progress to face Whalsay in the last eight.
Whalsay earned a bye to the quarters after Ardersier were unable to field a team, meaning they will play Inver on 11 July in a reply of their quarter-final clash last year.
On that occasion, Inver sneaked past Whalsay 1-0 to win through to the final four.
SPURS meanwhile recovered from their cup disappointment to thrash Ness and surge clear at the top of the premier league.
The milkbags won 4-0 against second-placed Ness in the South Mainland on Monday night, with in-form Lewis Harkness grabbing a hat-trick to move Spurs four points clear at the summit.
That was actually the lowest scoring game of the night, with champions Whitedale putting seven past Scalloway – four of which coming from Greg Tulloch.
In the other game, Whalsay beat Thistle 6-2, with eight different goalscorers on the night.
SHETLAND ACSC (Hurricanes) held its annual prize-giving last week, bringing the season to a close and celebrating another year of progress across the club.
Swimmers, teachers, and coaches have all put in a tremendous effort throughout the year, and this was clear to see at the end‑of‑term gala.
The club said was great to see the confidence the young swimmers showed and the improvements made across all age groups.
The winners of the most improved boy and girl trophies were Leigh Gray, winner of the Calum Younger trophy for most improved boy, and Ella Winks – winner of the Rotary Cup for most improved girl.

The Luke Malcolmson memorial trophy was awarded jointly to Sophia and Amaya Cheatle. This is awarded to a member of the club “facing unusual or challenging circumstances”.
The annual raffle was drawn the evening before the prize-giving, and the club congratulated the prize winners and thanked everyone who purchased tickets in support of the event.

JUST one point separates the top three teams in the Simpson pairs bowls league after six weeks of the 14 game league.
Alex Elphinstone and Anne Robertson hold onto their single point lead after beating Gordon Stevenson and Jean Jarmson by 44 shots to three.
The two teams close behind on 9 points are Ian Scott and Gibbie Pottinger, and also Ann Napier and Rosie Jamieson.
Alan Smith was substituting for Pottinger this week and along with Scott beat Pauline Christey and Bob Brandie 22-8, substitutes for Bill Christey and Norman Manson.
Napier and Jamieson had to fight back in their game against Margaret Robertson and Jim Wood, trailing until the 14th end when they scored six shots to go 15-13 ahead.
Napier and Jamieson won the final wo ends to run out 20-13 winners.
The fourth game of the afternoon was tight with many low scoring ends, but John Jarmson and Caroline Smith won 19-13.
