TWO SHETLANDERS are in the running for prizes at this year’s Scots Language Awards, with the public able to vote for their favourites.
Author Yvonne Tait is in the running for the Scots Book o the Year prize for her debut release, A Meid athin da Twalmont.
Songwriter and traditional fiddle player Claire White is also up for the Scots Language in the Media prize for her role in producing and presenting Midder Tongue on BBC Radio Shetland during its winter programme season.
Hosted by Scots ambassadors Lynne Campbell and Taylor Dyson, the ceremony will also feature performances from acclaimed Scots artists including award-winning singer Iona Fyfe, traditional singer Scott Gardiner and poet Hugh Macmillan – as well as Tait herself.
The public is able to vote for their winners from today (Monday) until Friday 11 September here.
The awards will take place at Dundee’s Discovery Point on Saturday 19 September.
SHORT film extravaganza Homemade is back this weekend at Mareel, showcasing the best of Shetland filmmakers back-to-back.
As well as having the usual screening of films up to four minutes in length, this year marks the first Homemade to feature films from four to 12 minutes long, aimed at more experienced film makers.
For the 0-4 minute event on Saturday there will be support from Shetland ForWirds, who will offer their annual award for the most effective use of Shaetlan.
The audience will also get to choose their favourite on the day, for which an Audience Choice trophy will be awarded.
For the 4-12 minute event on Sunday there will be reviews given by a panel of personnel in the film industry.
Local actor Steven Robertson, best known for his role as Detective Sandy Wilson in Shetland, will also discuss the technical challenges of getting from script to screen in a workshop on Saturday.
It comes as Shetland Arts and Mareel also celebrates the national cinema weekender on Saturday and Sunday, with all cinema tickets £4 for the weekend.

APPLICATIONS are now open for Ocean Kinetics’ 2026 ‘Futures’ scholarship programme, supporting students studying STEM subjects at either HND or degree level.
The successful student will receive a £3,000 annual bursary, together with one-to-one mentoring from the Ocean Kinetics team and the opportunity to undertake paid work placements during university breaks.
Applications in writing are invited from Shetland students who plan to study a STEM subject at either HND or degree level this year.
Letters should include the applicant’s skills and qualifications, the chosen course and college/university, and the reason they are drawn to this particular course/establishment.
They should also explain why they believe they are the ideal candidate, if there are any barriers that might prevent them undertaking study without scholarship support, and anything that is interesting or unique about their choice of career and/or ambitions, and how that ambition might benefit Shetland in the future.
