Strong trio earn top 10 finishes at world championships

THREE Shetland strongman athletes were in Paisley earlier this month to compete in the Natural Strongman World Championships.

It was a very successful competition for all three, who all came away with top 10 finishes in their categories after going through seven different tests of strength.

Tegan Patterson, Alec Robinson and Cameron Nisbet earned top 10 finishes at the Natural Strongman World Championships.

Eighteen-year old Alec Robinson competed on the Friday and Saturday in the men’s junior age category (23 and under) and placed 10th despite being amongst the youngest and lightest in his category.

Tegan Patterson competed in the women’s U73kg weight class and placed sixth while achieving many personal bests amongst a very competitive field.

Cameron Nisbet also competed on the Saturday and Sunday in the lightest men’s category of U72kg, where he managed to climb back up the leaderboard from failing the first event to eventually place second.

Among the seven events the competition tested (weighted appropriately to each category) were a squat where weights had to touch boxes on either side before standing back up, and a sled push into sandbag carry into a drag down a 10 metre course.

There was also a log press for repetitions from the floor to overhead, a timed farmers carry down a 15 metre course and back, and a deadlift where weight was added to the bar after every successful repetition.

A timed yoke carry down a 12 metre course and back into two single hand overhead dumbbell lifts and finally a loading race where a keg, sandbag, keg, and sandbag of increasing weight had to be carried and loaded on to a platform as quickly as possible completed the event.

Some of the Shetlanders’ highlights included Robinson completing his 30m course of 130kg per hand farmers carry in 25.57s.

Robinson also managed to carry a 330kg yoke on his back over a 24m course in only 16.98s.

For Patterson highlights included squatting a 120kg weight for four repetitions and managing to load a 90kg sandbag and keg in her loading medley.

For Nisbet winning the sled event and winning the loading medley of a 100kg keg and sandbag and 110kg keg and sandbag in a time of 36.2s were the two main high points.

All three athletes thanked Shetland Weight Training Club for their sponsorship.

Next up is the Shetland’s Strongest Man and Shetland’s Strongest Woman competitions this weekend, which are being held at the Research fishing company in Lerwick.

The event starts at 12 noon on Saturday 5 September.
