‘Historic moment’ as Erin to become junior jarl
JUNIOR UP Helly Aa (JUHA) is set to have its first female guizer jarl after Erin Harries was elected to the role for 2027.
Organisers said it “marks a historic moment in the festival’s history and future – one of inclusion, leadership and the celebration of Shetland’s evolving community traditions”.
The junior festival has been on the go since the 1950s but girls have only been involved since 2023, echoing similar moves from the senior Up Helly Aa.
JUHA adopted a 50/50 participation model to ensure equal opportunities for boys and girls in the procession.
Erin was elected following a vote among young people today (Wednesday).
The committee said: “The election of Erin as the 2027 junior jarl builds on this and reflects the enthusiasm shown by young people across Shetland towards the junior festival.
“Erin’s election is a testament to the festival’s dedication to ensuring that every participant has the chance to contribute, lead, and shape the future of this cherished tradition.
“The Junior Up Helly Aa committee extends its warmest congratulations to Erin Harries the 2027 junior jarl and looks forward to supporting her as she prepares for the year ahead.
“Her leadership will stand as an inspiration to young people throughout the isles and a proud milestone in the festival’s future.”
The 2026 festival also saw Ami Grains join the Junior Up Helly Aa band.
