Community / Junior jarl squad to head south for intergenerational congress

The 2026 Junior Up Helly Aa jarl squad.

MEMBERS of the Junior Up Helly Aa (JUHA) jarl squad will travel to Glasgow later this year to attend an international congress about intergenerational practice.

The Global Intergenerational Congress brings together “thought leaders, practitioners, volunteers, and researchers to move beyond discussion into meaningful, practical action”.

Their aim is to create a space where listening, trust and collaboration lead to “lasting relationships and innovative solutions” – embedding intergenerational practice as a vital part of everyday life.

Members of the JUHA squad as well as musicians and volunteers will attend the event in September.

They will present their showcase on intergenerational approaches to education at the University of Strathclyde, Technology and Innovation Centre.

JUHA chairman Martin Summers said the festival “emphasises intergenerational learning, leadership and community involvement”.

“It serves as a way for young people to learn about their heritage while developing valuable leadership and life skills,” he said.

“Junior Up Helly Aa is a community event with young people at its heart, from planning to execution.

“It is an important cultural event that fosters a sense of identity and continuity among the next generation in Shetland whether these are young people taking part in the procession or those who dance the night away at the Junior Hop.

“It is a great honour, as we celebrate 70 years of Junior Up Helly Aa, to be able to showcase all that is special about the festival.

Robbie Stout, who is the JUHA treasurer, said: “The Junior Up Helly Aa fire festival empowers young people to learn, lead, and carry forward Shetland’s cultural traditions.

“We look forward to helping those attending to discover how shared experiences and mentorship ensure the resilience of our island’s heritage and community for generations to come.”

The event is organised by Generations Working Together, which is the nationally recognised centre of excellence supporting the development and integration of intergenerational work across Scotland.

A spokesperson said they were “absolutely delighted” to be welcoming Junior Up Helly Aa to the event.

“Their work is a powerful example of intergenerational practice in action — where young people are supported to lead, learn, and carry forward cultural traditions that matter deeply to their community,” they continued.

“Having the Junior Jarl Squad share their story with a global audience will bring energy, authenticity and inspiration to the Congress.”

The young people attending are currently fundraising to support their travel and accommodation costs with support from their families.

The festival has secured £1,000 donations from Shetland Youth Voice YouthBank and the Zetland Educational Trust to go towards costs.

NorthLink Ferries will also be providing discounted travel sponsorship.
