Whalsay become just second Shetland side to reach Highland Amateur Cup final
WHALSAY are through to the final of football’s Highland Amateur Cup, becoming just the second Shetland side to reach the last two in the competition’s history.
The team from the Bonnie Isle beat Black Rock Rovers of Evanton 3-1 in the last four today (Saturday) in Castletown, and will now contest the final on Saturday 15 August.
Whalsay took the lead early into the tie but were quickly pegged back by Black Rock, before Whalsay surged into a 3-1 half-time lead.
They were able to see out the second half to ensure a maiden visit to the Highland Amateur Cup final.
Either Mallaig or Golspie Stafford will now meet them in the last two, with neither side having won the competition before.
Whalsay have overcome fellow Shetland side Southside Impact and Stornoway United on their way through the competition, with Ardersier and Inver pulling out of their third round and quarter-final ties respectively.
The Highland Amateur Cup is the premier cup competition for the Highlands and Islands, with eight Shetland teams entering this season.
No Shetland team has ever won the trophy, with Lerwick Spurs coming closest prior to this season – losing 2-1 in extra-time to Pentland United in the 2018 final.
