Port authority pays tribute to Charles Smith after 40 years of service
LERWICK Port Authority (LPA) has paid tribute to the “outstanding contribution” of pilot Charles Smith after he reached the milestone of 40 years’ service.
Smith recently received his long service award to recognise his four decades of dedication to the LPA and the safe operation of Lerwick Harbour.
He joined the LPA as a port controller in 1986 before becoming a harbour pilot in 1990, since playing a key role in the safe guiding of vessels in and out of the harbour.
During his career he has piloted more than 10,500 vessels, ranging from fishing boats and tankers to cruise ships and specialist offshore vessels.
The LPA said that among the many highlights of his career was piloting the 181,541 gross tonne MSC Virtuosa on its maiden call to Lerwick in 2024 – the largest cruise ship ever to visit the harbour.
LPA chief executive Captain Calum Grains said: “Reaching 40 years of service is a tremendous achievement and a reflection of Charles’ dedication, professionalism and commitment to Lerwick Port Authority.
“Throughout his career, he has made an invaluable contribution to the safe and efficient operation of the harbour, earning the respect of colleagues and the many vessel masters he has worked alongside.
“On behalf of the board and everyone at Lerwick Port Authority, I would like to congratulate Charles on this significant milestone and thank him for his outstanding service over the past four decades.”
