Big improvement in Sandwick nursery inspection grades

THE SANDWICK Junior High School nursery has been given ‘very good’ and ‘good’ grades by inspectors, representing a significant improvement on ratings given last year.

Among the key messages from inspectors was that children were cared for with nurturing and caring approaches, they experienced high quality play and learning opportunities and that management and staff were committed to continued development.

An unannounced inspection took place between 3 and 5 June. It came after a mixed report last year which included some ‘weak’ and ‘adequate’ evaluations.

In the latest inspection the nursery received very good ratings in categories ‘children thrive and develop in quality spaces’ and ‘children play and learn’.

It was given ‘good’ grades for ‘leadership’ and ‘children are supported to achieve’.

Also among the praise was that children benefitted from a “warm and homely environment that was very well resourced”.

Inspectors also highlighted the quality assurance and self-evaluation methods, and said there were positive relationships with families.

Some aspects which would benefit from improvement included regular monitoring of staff practice and staff deployment at meal times.

Headteacher Christie Ford, who took up post in November, said via the school’s Facebook page that she was “incredibly proud to have worked alongside such a dedicated, committed and hardworking team to ensure the very best learning experiences and outcomes for our children”.

“This inspection outcome reflects the collective effort, professionalism and passion of everyone involved, and it is extremely rewarding to see that commitment recognised so positively,” she said.

Shetland News also reported earlier this week on positive inspection reports for Lunnasting Primary School and Mid Yell Junior High School.

Last month there were also very good and good grades for the Baltasound Junior High School in Unst.
