News / Macwhirter to give ‘Road to Referendum’ talk
ONE OF Scotland’s leading political correspondents, Iain Macwhirter, will visit Shetland in August for a talk on his critically acclaimed book ‘Road to Referendum’.
He will speak in Room 16 at Islesburgh on 12 August, just over five weeks ahead of the 18 September referendum on Scottish independence.
Macwhirter, who writes opinion columns in The Herald and Sunday Herald newspapers, will discuss the key issues surrounding Scottish independence with local historian and county archivist Brian Smith. It will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience and all are welcome to come along.
‘Road to Referendum’ served as a companion piece to last year’s three-part STV television series of the same name. It takes readers back through Scottish history to look at the social, political, and economic changes that led to the rise of Scottish nationalism, and to the potential end of the United Kingdom.
Macwhirter will discuss all this and more in what promises to be an exciting and informative evening on a tour coinciding with the recent release of a newly revised paperback version of the book.
Neil Riddell of Shetland News, which is helping to fund MacWhirter’s visit, said he hoped it would help stimulate debate ahead of a vote which will shape Scotland’s future.
“We hope the talk will attract a mixture of yes, no and undecided voters,” said Bevington. “It’ll be a great opportunity to hear from, and ask questions of, one of Scotland’s most seasoned and highly respected political analysts as folk decide which way to vote in September.”
