Scottish Water attending burst water main in Sand

SCOTTISH Water is working to fix a burst water main which has left folk in Sand without running water.

The company was not able to carry out the repairs in the West Mainland last night (Thursday) because of a landslip on the road between Garderhouse and Reawick after heavy rainfall.

Bottled water had to be delivered to folk in Sand last night as a result of the outage.

Engineers were able to reach the scene this morning after the road was cleared, with water supplies expected to be returned at 1pm.

Scottish Water said service would be gradually restored to affected customers, and advised people that it may take some time for water pressure to return to normal levels.

“We understand the inconvenience this causes and sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding while we work to resolve the issue,” the company added.

Traffic for Reawick and Skeld was directed through the Houllmalees and Gruting last night as a result of the landslip.

Scottish Water said the sudden and “severe” rainfall had exceeded the hydraulic capacity of the network in Lerwick yesterday, leading to overflowing drains and flooding.

“In these circumstances the sewer system can become overwhelmed, leading to flooding even where the infrastructure is operating as designed,” a spokesperson said.

It said that, as it was not technically sewer flooding, Scottish Water was not involved in the efforts to stem the flooding.

“If any customers had experienced issues with sewer flooding then we would assist,” the company added.
