SIC working to clear drains after widespread flooding

Flooding affected Lerwick's Harrison Square during the heavy rain.

WIDESPREAD flooding has affected parts of Lerwick, particularly in the centre of the town.

Shops and businesses such as Peerie Shop café, Superdrug and The Dowry have reported flooding damage on the street, with sandbags being deployed by Shetland Islands Council to stem the tide.

In some cases damaged stock has had to be thrown out.

It comes following a sustained period of heavy rain, which appeared to overwhelm drains in Lerwick.

Businesses including iCare Shetland, The Nomadic Pizzeria and The Noost bar announced they would close today (Thursday) as a result.

Roads were also badly affected, with the Market Cross and the Co-op roundabout among some of the worst hit areas. The North Road also experienced flooding.

The SIC said its road workers were trying to clear drains in several areas, with drains on the Veensgarth brae and on the road north out of Lerwick currently being cleared.

“The added impact of high tides has meant flooding around the Esplanade and Harrison Square in Lerwick, with sandbags being supplied on request,” the SIC said.

“Motorists are being asked to take extra care in the meantime, and drive to the current conditions.”

Scottish Water said the sudden and “severe” rainfall had exceeded the hydraulic capacity of the network.

“In these circumstances the sewer system can become overwhelmed, leading to flooding even where the infrastructure is operating as designed.”
