Election / Voting reminder

PEOPLE are being reminded to make sure they are registered to vote in the upcoming Scottish Parliamentary by-election.

Poll cards are now arriving in letterboxes across Shetland and if anyone does not receive one then they need to register by 13 August.

The by-election, triggered by the resignation of Tavish Scott, is taking place on 29 August.

People are also reminded that 16 and 17 year olds are eligible to vote.

Electoral registration officer for Orkney and Shetland Dennis Stevenson said: “Now is the time to make sure you can take part in the by election and I’d remind everyone in Shetland they need to act now if they’re not already registered to vote.

“It’s quick and easy to register at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote but after the deadline of 13th August, it will be too late.”

The last date to apply for a postal vote, meanwhile, is Wednesday 14 August and, for a proxy vote – to appoint someone to vote on your behalf – is Wednesday 21 August.
