News / Shetland lift the Stuart Cup

SHETLAND’S junior inter-county team was celebrating on Sunday afternoon after winning the Stuart Cup following an emphatic 4-1 victory over Orkney in the football.

The fifth and final competition of the weekend sealed Shetland’s victory after both sides had won two competitions each and were level on 139.25 points.

It is the first time in three years that Shetland lifted the Stuart Cup after Orkney won the two previous competitions.

The weekend of sport kicked off on Saturday with athletics, swimming and netball. After day one Shetland was ahead with 139.25 points to Orkney’s 119.25 points.

Orkney closed the gap on Sunday morning by beating the Shetland hockey team 4-0 in Brae.

It was up to the football team to seal the victory. After falling behind 1-0 early in the game, the team fought back to level at half time and then score another three goals to lift the cup.
