We have a summer placement opportunity for a Laboratory Technician to support our fish health and quality monitoring work. Working closely with the lab team, you’ll help deliver daily water sampling and analysis across our Shetland sites, focusing on the identification and enumeration of harmful plankton and jellyfish species. The role also supports staff training and provides technical input on fish health and welfare.
ABOUT THE ROLE
This is a hands-on opportunity for someone with a strong interest in marine biology or aquaculture. You’ll gain practical lab experience, contribute to real-world fish health services, and support ongoing improvements in water quality monitoring.
Key duties include:
- Processing and analysing of water samples.
- Communicating of findings to marine sites.
- Maintaining lab equipment and records.
- Assisting with staff training and development of procedures.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
We’re looking for someone with a keen interest in marine biology, aquaculture or a related science who brings a careful, methodical approach to their work. Strong communication skills, a willingness to learn, and a genuine interest in fish health and environmental monitoring are key.
