Letters / In search of packmen
The ‘Incoming’ project, a collaboration between Raman Mundair and the Shetland Museum and Archives, aims to collect narratives by people who have come to Shetland over the years.
The project is going very well. However, we have found it difficult to get information about packmen from the Indian subcontinent who used to visit Shetland to sell goods. They were a familiar feature of the islands in the second half of the 20th century.
We would like to collect reminiscences from people who remember these visitors.
We would like to know more about them: where they came from, what they sold, how they related to Shetlanders, and any other information.
You can get in touch with us at the email addresses below, or, if people would like to send a letter, to Raman at Shetland Museum and Archives, Hay’s Dock, Lerwick.
In addition, if you are happy to be interviewed by Raman on the subject, she would love to hear from you.

Shetland News is asking its many readers to consider start paying for their dose of the latest local news delivered straight to their PC, tablet or mobile phone.
Journalism comes at a price and because that price is not being paid in today’s rapidly changing media world, most publishers - national and local - struggle financially despite very healthy audience figures.
Most online publishers have started charging for access to their websites, others have chosen a different route. Shetland News currently has over 600 supporters who are all making small voluntary financial contributions. All funds go towards covering our cost and improving the service further.
Your contribution will ensure Shetland News can: -
- Bring you the headlines as they happen;
- Stay editorially independent;
- Give a voice to the community;
- Grow site traffic further;
- Research and publish more in-depth news, including more Shetland Lives features.
