Haspa Hamburg first over the line in Bergen-Shetland Race
THE GERMAN registered yacht Haspa Hamburg was first to cross the finishing line this morning in a hugely competitive first leg of the Bergen-Shetland Race.
The 16-metre yacht with a crew of 11 crossed the line at 10.28am after taking the lead at the Bressay light.
It took her just 22 hours and 28 minutes to cross the North Sea from Bergen to Lerwick.
Following just two minutes behind was the largest yacht in this year’s race, the 76’ Enderpearl.
Third was the Swedish yacht Luft, a new entrant to the annual race.
Sandra Laurenson of the race committee described it as a “really exciting finish”.
The remaining 17 yachts still in the race are expected to arrive in Lerwick from lunchtime onwards.
The largest yachts rarely win the race overall though, as there is a handicapping system which adjusts the crossing time by a factor of the yacht’s capability to even the field across all sizes of yachts.
The progress of the yachts can be followed here.
