Community / Teenager to run Edinburgh half-marathon in memory of late uncle
A TEENAGER is set to run the Edinburgh half-marathon later this month in memory of his late uncle.
Joe Smith is set to take on the 13.1 mile race in honour of Colin Angus, who died suddenly with a heart problem in 2024.
Smith said he had chosen to run the marathon in the Scottish capital on Sunday 24 May as a tribute to Colin, with all the money going to the British Heart Foundation.
He has already raised over £1,000 for the charity.
“I decided it would be a good thing to do in memory of him and to challenge myself to do it,” he told Shetland News.
“I was never into running all that much or fitness, however since the training I’ve lost a pile of weight and feeling much better for it.”
He will be one of thousands of competitors, including more from Shetland, lining up at the start line in Edinburgh’s city centre this weekend.
The half-marathon starts at 8am before the 26.2 mile marathon kicks off at 10am.
There are also 10km, 5km and junior races being held on Saturday 23 May.
Smith, a keen footballer, said he had picked up the running bug after signing up and training for the half-marathon.
“I very much intend to continue with it after the half-marathon,” he said.
“I’d highly recommend it to anyone.”
Fundraising for the race has been “going well”, Smith added, and he gave a “huge thanks” to his football club Lerwick Spurs – who donated £700 to his fundraiser after their annual awards night.
