Westings Inn granted alcohol licence
THE WESTINGS Inn in Whiteness has been given approval to sell alcohol on site from 11am to 1am daily.
The café/bar, which sits on the Wormadale hill and overlooks Nesbister, welcomed customers back in May and has stuck to coffee, cakes and lunchtime favourites so far.
However owners Tom and David Sutherland had applied to be able to sell alcohol to both hotel guests and visitors to the bar.
No off sales licence was sought by The Westings.
Shetland Islands Council’s licensing board considered and approved the application at a meeting this morning (Monday).
In its application, The Westings’ owner Tom Sutherland said that live music, televised sport and social functions may also be catered for at the hotel.
They have sought an 11am-1am licence from Monday-Sunday but said that their opening hours will depend on popularity.
Shetland Central member Catherine Hughson said it was “absolutely great” to see The Westings back open and being available to the public.
“It’s a really needed café and social space in the West Mainland,” she said.
“They have done a lot of hard work to get it up and running.”
Fellow Shetland Central representative Moraig Lyall agreed, saying it was “great to see” what she called an “iconic building” being opened again.
She added there were “not a lot of social spaces in the West Side” and seconded a move to grant The Westings’ application.
Lerwick North and Bressay member Stephen Leask wished The Westings’ owners good luck in their venture.
No objections had been lodged by either the police department or the council’s licensing officer.
Walls Public Hall was also granted permission to change its premises licence, to allow it to add an outdoor drinking area outside the hall.
It said that an area out the back of the hall would be used for outdoor drinking, with the hall also asking for its licence to include televised sport and gaming facilities.
These facilities could include pool, darts, snooker and bingo, it added.
