THE WESTINGS Inn in Whiteness is seeking approval to sell alcohol on site from 11am to 1am daily.

The café/bar, which sits on the Wormadale hill and overlooks Nesbister, welcomed customers back in May and has stuck to coffee, cakes and lunchtime favourites so far.

However owners Tom and David Sutherland are now applying to be able to sell alcohol to both hotel guests and visitors to the bar.

No off sales licence is being sought by The Westings.

Shetland Islands Council’s licensing board will consider the application at a meeting next Monday morning.

In its application, The Westings’ owner Tom Sutherland said that live music, televised sport and social functions may also be catered for at the hotel.

They have sought an 11am-1am licence from Monday-Sunday but said that their opening hours will depend on popularity.

He said that The Westings may close over the winter if they are quiet, and might only open from April-October instead.

Children would only be able to access the café/bar area between 7am and 10pm, he said, with the area needing to remain accessible to hotel guests for breakfasts, lunch and dinners.

The maximum capacity of the premises would be 59 people.

No objections were lodged by either the police department or the council’s licensing officer.

Tom Sutherland said The Westings was “committed to operating as a safe, responsible and well-managed licensed premises”.

“We are committed to working constructively with the licensing board, Police Scotland and other relevant agencies where required, and to ensuring that our customers can enjoy the premises in a safe and welcoming environment while minimising any impact on the local community.”

Walls Public Hall has also applied to change its premises licence, to allow it to add an outdoor drinking area outside the hall.

It said that an area out the back of the hall would be used for outdoor drinking, with the hall also asking for its licence to include televised sport and gaming facilities.

These facilities could include pool, darts, snooker and bingo, it added.
