£2m warmer homes funding ‘will make a real difference’ for Shetlanders

MORE people in Shetland could benefit from warmer homes and lower bills due to funding from the Scottish Government almost doubling this year.

Shetland Islands Council has welcomed £2 million in funding through the Scottish Government’s heat and energy efficient Scotland programme for 2026-27.

In previous years, the SIC has received around £1.15 million from the Scottish Government for energy efficiency measures.

The £2m funding is set to support more than 150 households across Shetland, with around 200 energy efficiency measures installed to help make homes warmer, more energy efficient, and more affordable to heat.

Delivery of the programme is managed by Warmworks on behalf of Shetland Islands Council.

Warmworks has been working in Shetland since 2015, delivering the Scottish Government’s national fuel poverty scheme Warmer Homes Scotland, and was also appointed as the council’s delivery partner heat and energy efficiency scheme in 2025.

SIC environment and estate operations manager Carl Symons said this funding would help people across Shetland access things like better insulation, solar panels and heat pump systems.

He added the funding “will make a real difference to people’s homes.”

Warmworks’ managing director for Scotland, Nicola Mcleod, said the investment would reduce energy costs for Shetlanders and would help them enjoy warmer homes. “At a time when many people remain concerned about heating bills, this support will make a real difference to communities,” she said.

“We remain committed to helping people live in warmer, healthier, and more affordable homes.

“I would strongly encourage anyone interested in finding out more about how to make their home warmer and more energy efficient to get in touch with the local team, whether that be giving them a call or visiting our Lerwick office.”

Warmworks also has an office in Lerwick and works with local companies to install improvements for eligible households.
