Members of the Whalsay History group, whose knowledge and generosity have been invaluable to the exhibition, will be joining the morning’s panel discussion.

SHETLAND Museum and Archives is hosting a day of talks, poetry and film to mark the closing of its Outwith exhibition.

The exhibition has explored the creativity and enduring legacy of Christopher and Valda Grieve through the lens of their time in Whalsay.

It will come to an end on Saturday 20 June, with a number of events marking its success.

A panel discussion, bringing together voices from the Whalsay Heritage Group and Shetland Museum and Archives, will open the day and will explore the couple’s years in Whalsay.

In the afternoon visitors will have the chance to hear from leading MacDiarmid scholars as they examine the lasting significance of the Grieves’ time in Whalsay.

The celebrations will conclude with an evening of poetry and film inspired by Hugh MacDiarmid, with local poets sharing selections of MacDiarmid’s work alongside their own writing.

The night also features two films – Margaret Tait’s portrait and Oscar Marzaroli’s take on MacDiarmid and his world.

Collections manager Tracey Hawkins said Outwith had been a “special exhibition” for them.

“This will be a wonderful way to bring the exhibition to a close and to celebrate the many people who have contributed to its success.

“It has been a privilege to share this fascinating chapter in the lives of Hugh and Valda.”

You can book your space for the final event at the Shetland Museum box office.

“This award reflects not only their enthusiasm and commitment, but also the support of families and the wider community, who play a vital role in everything we do.

“We are incredibly proud of what has been achieved.”

FINDINGS from a special workshop in Lerwick have helped shaped a report on Scotland’s largest ever consultation on heritage.

Folk in Shetland were among over 6,000 people who responded to the Historic Environment Scotland report Talking About Heritage, which was published today (Monday).

As part of the project, a workshop took place in Lerwick where people shared stories about the wealth of history surrounding them on Shetland, the importance of oral history, and the links between local and national history.

Participants spoke about Burra Ness broch, Jarlshof and the unknown sailors’ gravestone as examples of special places that carried history into the present.

Discussions centred around the importance of recognising and caring for historic sites , and several attendees spoke about archaeology as a valuable process for learning more about the past.

HES heritage director Elizabeth McCrone said Talking About Heritage has given them “valuable information about what matters to people”.

“It’s amazing that over six thousand people talked to us about what heritage means to them,” she said.

“I’d like to thank everyone who took part in the conversation, whether that was on Instagram, in a workshop, or by filling out our survey.”
