News / Amenity trust secures funding for lace knitting project
SHETLAND Amenity Trust has received over £55,000 for a new project which will digitise key parts of Shetland Museum’s lace knitting collection and improve its catalogue records.
The Museums Galleries Scotland funding will be used to employ two knitted lace specialists and a collections assistant to review its collection and enhance its records.
It is said that within the last ten years there has been increased interest from the public in the “history, design and execution” of Shetland knitted lace.
This has led to a doubling of the existing lace collection through donations.
The project will “identify and digitise key objects as well as producing a pattern catalogue” which will be sold.
A total of 15 projects across Scotland received a share of funding totalling over £550,000 from Museums Galleries Scotland.
A knitted lace fence at the Shetland Textile Museum in Lerwick, meanwhile, continues to attract interest from across the globe (pictured above).
Anne Eunson previously knitted a fence for her garden in Hamnavoe using fishing twine, and she was recently asked to do the same at the museum at Gremista.
A Facebook post detailing the making of the fence has since been shared nearly 16,000 times – including by the likes of fashion publication Vogue.
