News / Tesco to introduce online shopping
AROUND 25 new jobs are to be created in Lerwick as Tesco introduces online shopping to islanders.
Construction work on a small extension to the existing super store at South Road will begin next week.
Store manager Paul Clelland said the company was responding to public demand and he was confident that the new dotcom service would go live as early as late May.
The new service will allow customers to shop online and have their purchases delivered at a time of their choice.
“We are really pleased to be responding to our customers requests and investing in Shetland with a new grocery home delivery service,” Clelland said.
“Many of our customers travel huge distances to get to the store and say they would find the option of having their shopping delivered really useful in terms of saving them both time and money.”
A similar service was introduced to the Stornoway store a few weeks ago, and has been in place on the Isle of Man for many years.
Shetland Islands Council’s planning department approved the company’s application to erect a ‘dot com’ admin block, a loading canopy and ‘click and collect canopy’ in July last year.
Clelland said the investment into upgrading the store was “significant”.
“We’ll be starting work on upgrades to our store shortly to get ready for the launch of the new service.
“We’ll be sharing more information about the service and the new jobs available in the coming weeks on our Facebook page and in store”.
Tesco said that shopping via their www.tesco.com site has proved hugely popular and added that the growth in smartphone use had rapidly accelerated the trend.
